Eat with the Seasons: 7 Fruits & Vegetables to Incorporate into Your Diet this Fall

‘Tis the season for apple picking, hayrides, oversized sweaters and pumpkin everything. It’s official: fall is in the air.

And along with our favorite autumn activities also comes a bounty of hearty produce. Here are some of our go-to seasonal picks to fill your grocery cart – and farmer’s market bag – with this year.

Why We Love it: Once September rolls around, a trip to your local farm to go apple picking is a must. We love all of the tasty varieties and versatility of these  fiber-packed, antioxidant-rich  gems – making them a delicious option for mixing into salads, desserts or snacking straight off the tree!

Try it Yourself: Pair crisp apple slices with nut butter or a slice of your favorite cheese or whip up this Autumn Apple Salad with Maple Vinaigrette – made with feta, bacon, cranberries, pecans and not one but two types of apples.

 Brussels Sprouts

Why We Love it: Brussels sprouts pack a flavorful punch, and as a member of the cruciferous vegetable family they’re known for their nutrients and phytochemicals – which have been studied for their impact on cancer prevention. Win, win!

Try it Yourself: Keep it simple with this mouthwatering New York Times recipe for Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Garlic.

Why We Love it: With their deep purple-red hue, beets are jam-packed with antioxidants and may be helpful in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress.

Try it Yourself: Serve ‘em up raw in a salad or try your hand at this 5-ingredient Balsamic Roasted Beets recipe.

 Sweet Potatoes

Why We Love it: This vibrant root veggie is rich in fiber as well as Vitamins A and C. We love their naturally sweet taste, making them a delicious and healthy fix to tame your sweet tooth this coming season.

Try it Yourself: Bake them, use them as a healthy substitute for white potatoes in your go-to recipes, or jazz up your Meatless Monday with these vegetarian Stuffed Sweet Potatoes with Black Beans & Quinoa.

Why We Love it: Apple’s curvy cousin, the pear has a place in our heart as well. And they’ve got similar health benefits to boot, like being a great source of antioxidants and dietary fiber.

Try it Yourself: Enjoy them with our Pear-y Green Pineapple Smoothie, chopped up in your oatmeal, or as a highlight of your autumn baked goods – like these healthy Pear Oatmeal Bars!

Why We Love it: From acorn to spaghetti squash, you’ll find plenty of varieties of this fall and winter staple! We love that they’re packed with fiber and vitamins like Vitamin C, and also have a naturally subtly sweet taste to ward off sugar cravings.

Try it Yourself: While we love all varieties of winter squash, there’s nothing like spaghetti squash! Use it as a healthy substitute in your favorite pasta dishes – like this Spaghetti Squash with Turkey Meatballs.

Why We Love it: A dark purple-red on the inside, this vibrant fruit has gotten quite the attention the past few years – and for good reason! Studies have shown pomegranates have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticarcinogenic effects, and may be useful in preventing certain diseases.

Try it Yourself: Top your yogurt and salads with pomegranate arils (the juice-filled pulps on the inside), or incorporate pure pomegranate juice in this delicious Berries & Cream Smoothie.
