What Does Boron Do for the Body? Benefits, Dosage, and Forms
Boron is a trace mineral involved in how the body handles calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D, and in the function of steroid hormones. It is not classified as an essential nutrient for humans, and no Recommended Dietary Allowance has ever been set. Most American adults take in roughly 1 to 1.5 mg per day from food and supplements combined.1
Is boron an essential nutrient?
Not for humans, at least by the formal definition. The National Institutes of Health states that boron is not classified as essential because research has not yet identified a clear biological function for it. The Food and Nutrition Board found existing data insufficient to derive an RDA, Adequate Intake, or Estimated Average Requirement, which is why boron carries no Daily Value on a Supplement Facts panel.1
For plants, the answer is different. Boron is a structural component of plant cell walls and is required for growth, pollination, and seed formation.1 A 2014 University of Missouri study traced the mechanism in maize: mutants unable to transport boron developed malformed meristems, the stem cell pools every plant organ grows from, along with stunted tassels and ears. Applying boron reversed the defects.2
Why is boron scarce in much of the U.S. food supply?
The boron content of plant foods depends on the soil and water where they were grown. Most of the United States has limited soil boron, primarily because high rainfall leaches it out. Arid regions, including California and parts of Turkey, Argentina, Chile, Russia, China, and Peru, hold higher concentrations.1
What is calcium fructoborate, and which form of boron is best?
Calcium fructoborate is a sugar-borate ester, the same class of compound in which boron occurs naturally in fruits and vegetables. Supplements use many forms, including sodium borate, boron citrate, boron glycinate, boron picolinate, and calcium fructoborate.1
Worth stating plainly: no data compare the bioavailability of these forms against one another.1 Anyone claiming one form absorbs better than another is ahead of the evidence. The body absorbs roughly 85% to 90% of ingested boron in general, and most is converted to boric acid in the gastrointestinal tract regardless of the starting compound.1
What distinguishes calcium fructoborate is the depth of its clinical literature. It is the most extensively studied boron compound in human trials, and the controlled studies NIH cites on joint comfort used it specifically.3,4 One labeling note: a Supplement Facts panel declares elemental boron, not the weight of the whole compound.1
Which foods contain the most boron?
Plant foods carry the largest amounts. In practice, the main dietary sources in the United States are coffee, milk, apples, beans, and potatoes, largely because those are consumed in volume rather than because they are concentrated.1

How much boron per day?
With no RDA, the practical reference points are the upper limit and observed intake. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for adults 19 and older is 20 mg per day, dropping to 17 mg for ages 14 to 18 and 11 mg for ages 9 to 13.1 The World Health Organization estimates an acceptable safe range of 1 to 13 mg per day for adults.1
Actual intake sits far below those ceilings. Median dietary intake among U.S. adults ranges from 0.87 to 1.35 mg per day, and total intake including supplements runs about 1.0 to 1.5 mg.1 Supplements commonly supply 0.15 to 6 mg of elemental boron, and the controlled calcium fructoborate trials NIH cites used 1.5, 3, and 6 mg per day.1,3,4
What are the benefits of boron?
The evidence base is uneven, stronger in some areas than others.
Bone formation and structure. Boron may play a role in bone growth and formation, possibly by influencing osteoblast and osteoclast activity or by affecting steroid hormone levels and calcium metabolism. Animal studies show deficiency produces measurable losses in bone strength and volume; human evidence remains limited.1
Calcium and magnesium balance. A low-boron diet has been shown to raise urinary calcium and magnesium excretion, meaning more of both minerals leaves the body rather than being retained.1
Vitamin D and estrogen function. Boron appears to influence the function of steroid hormones, including vitamin D and estrogen. Low intake has been associated with reduced plasma calcium and lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D.1
Joint comfort. In a two-week double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 60 adults with self-reported knee discomfort took 6 mg per day of boron as calcium fructoborate and showed significantly greater improvement in discomfort scores than the placebo group at both seven and fourteen days.4 Trial authors were employed by the ingredient manufacturer, and independent confirmation is still needed.1
Healthy inflammatory response. Controlled studies of calcium fructoborate have reported changes in circulating inflammatory markers, including C-reactive protein.3 These come from small studies, several conducted in populations already under clinical care.
Cognitive function and alertness. Limited data suggest low boron intake may affect brain function, with reduced mental alertness and impaired executive function observed under boron-restricted diets.1,5
