4 Small Action Steps Toward a Cleaner Earth & Brighter Future

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 — raising awareness about protecting our environment. This year’s theme is “Invest in Our Planet,” highlighting the importance of investing your time, resources, and energy into environmental issues. It’s also a great reminder that simple, everyday steps can greatly impact our future. This week on the Vibrant Health blog, we’re sharing four small steps you can take now toward a cleaner earth (and brighter future).

4 Simple Action Steps to Protect our Planet

  1. Invest in Reusable Food Storage Items
  2. Transform Your Trash into Something Beautiful
  3. Rethink Your Fashion Choices
  4. Choose Sustainable Hygiene Products

 1. Invest in Reusable Food Storage Items

You’ve likely heard the saying: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Well, one impactful way you can reuse is to swap single-use plastics and papers with reusable food storage items.

This includes swapping your children’s brown bagged lunch with a reusable lunch box, investing in a reusable water bottle, bringing your own shopping bags to the supermarket, and ditching the plastic baggies by utilizing reusable containers (such as silicone storage bags and Bee’s Wrap snack and sandwich bags).

2. Transform Your Trash into Something New

The saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” couldn’t ring more true when it comes to a sustainable earth. It’s always best to recycle what you can, but for those items that can’t be recycled or would otherwise go to the trash bin — like certain plastic containers — why not repurpose it into eco-friendly art? These Upcycled Pressed Flower Bookmarks are the perfect DIY art project for spring!

3. Rethink Your Fashion Choices

While clothing may not be top of mind when you think of  protecting the environment, fashion actually has a big impact on the earth. Known as “fast fashion” due to its cheap price-point and limited lifespan, a whopping 87% of clothing ends up in landfills according to EarthDay.org

To help offset the ongoing “fast fashion” issue, shop from sustainable brands you trust, buy second-hand when you can, donate your unwanted clothing, and buy less overall.

4. Choose Sustainable Hygiene Products

From baby diapers to feminine products like pads and tampons, these personal hygiene products create a ton of waste. To put it into perspective, nearly 20 billion disposable diapers end up in landfills each year, and studies have shown they can take up to 500 years to decompose

The good news: these days there are a number of sustainable alternatives. For one, families may consider switching to plant-based compostable or reusable diapers for your little ones. And look into cleaner period products like The Period Company who create non-toxic, waste-free period underwear for a cleaner earth.
